Demystifying Cloud Migration

Before we look at the specific tools, let's establish what actually means in practice. At its core, migrating to the cloud is like moving your entire physical office or house to a new, highly optimized location. Instead of running physical servers, databases, and hard drives in your own local server closet (on-premises), you package up those digital assets and move them to Microsoft's secure, globally distributed data centers.
When we talk about an Azure migration, we are specifically talking about using Microsoft's specialized frameworks and automated tools to shift those workloads. The goal isn't just to copy files over; it's to make sure your applications run reliably, securely, and cost-effectively once they arrive in Azure.

Let's dive right into ! Think of it as your centralized, digital command center for the entire moving process, housing all the specialized tools you need under one roof.
Instead of forcing you to use disjointed software for different databases, servers, and applications, this hub organizes everything into three primary capabilities:
  1. Assessment: Automatically scans your on-premises environment to figure out what you have, whether those servers are fully compatible with Azure, and how much it will cost to run them there.
  2. Migration: Replicates and shifts your actual live workloads into Azure with minimal disruptions.
  3. Modernization: Goes beyond just moving your files as-is by helping you transition older apps into modern, cloud-native services like Azure App Service or containerized environments.

The entire migration journey itself is structured into three clear, sequential phases: Assessment (evaluating your readiness and building the business case), Migration (executing the physical shift), and Optimization (fine-tuning performance and costs once you are live in the cloud). We will look at each of these phases as we move forward.

How does Azure Migrate find on-premises servers?

Azure finds your on-premises servers without you needing to install software on every single machine. Instead, it uses a single, lightweight virtual machine called the to act as a bridge.

This appliance continuously collects configuration details, software inventory, and performance data from your local servers. It then feeds all of this live data back to your central Azure Migrate hub.

By gathering this real-time performance data, the hub can accurately calculate how ready your servers are for the cloud and estimate exactly what your monthly Azure costs will look like.
