A Common Language for Business

Imagine trying to build a skyscraper without a blueprint. The plumber, electrician, and structural engineer would all have different ideas about how the building should work. ArchiMate is an open and independent modeling language for enterprise architecture. Think of it as a shared visual vocabulary for describing how an organization is built and how it operates.

It was developed by The Open Group, a global consortium, which means it’s a vendor-neutral standard. This prevents you from being locked into one company's proprietary tool or method. Its primary purpose is to provide a clear, unified way to visualize, analyze, and communicate complex business structures.

The Core Framework

ArchiMate's power lies in its simple, layered structure. It breaks down the complexity of an enterprise into three core layers, making it easier to see the connections between business goals and the technology that supports them.

  1. Business Layer: This is the 'why' of the organization. It describes the products and services a company offers to its customers, the business processes it uses to create them, and the organizational structure of roles and responsibilities.

  2. Application Layer: This is the 'how' in terms of software. It describes the software applications that support the business processes and manage the data used by the organization. For example, a 'Claim Processing' business process might be supported by a 'Claims Management System' application.

  3. Technology Layer: This is the 'where'—the physical or virtual infrastructure. It includes the hardware, networks, and system software (like operating systems and databases) that the applications run on.

By explicitly linking elements across these layers, ArchiMate helps you trace the impact of a change. For instance, you can see exactly which business processes would be affected if a particular server in the technology layer fails.
