For most of human history, people were nomads, constantly moving to follow their food. But about 12,000 years ago, humans figured out a massive shortcut: instead of chasing food, they could plant seeds and domesticate animals in one permanent spot.
This shift to farming meant people needed an absolute ton of water and incredibly fertile soil. That's why they headed straight for river valleys. When these rivers flooded, they left behind a thick layer of nutrient-rich mud, which acted like a super-powered fertilizer for crops.

This massive collective effort gave rise to the concept of a . Because controlling water was the key to survival, those who could organize and coordinate the construction of dams, canals, and dikes quickly gained absolute power over the society.
