To make sure we are ready for adding and subtracting, let's do a super quick review of equivalent fractions. These are different fractions that actually show the exact same amount!

For example, if you slice a pizza into 2 big pieces, $1/2$ of the pizza is the same amount of food as $2/4$ of a pizza that was sliced into 4 smaller pieces. Even though the numbers are different, the total amount of pizza you eat is identical.

We can find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing the top number (the numerator) and the bottom number (the denominator) by the same number. Let's look at this in action:

$\frac{1}{2} = \frac{1 \times 2}{2 \times 2} = \frac{2}{4}$
