Multi-digit multiplication & division

It is wonderful to connect with a fellow educator! Multi-digit multiplication and division are absolutely the core milestones of fourth grade, but they can also be some of the trickiest for students to master.

Before we dive into creating worksheets or games, let's look at what makes these concepts so challenging. When students transition from basic facts to multi-digit multiplication, they often struggle with keeping track of or get lost in the steps of the standard algorithm without understanding why they are doing them.

My students struggle more with division steps.

It is completely normal for students to hit a wall when it comes to division. Unlike multiplication, which generally moves in one predictable direction, division requires students to juggle multiple operations—multiplication, subtraction, and estimation—all at the same time while keeping track of place value.

When fourth graders struggle with , the breakdown usually happens in one of three areas:

Word problems are the perfect way to make remainders feel concrete rather than just a leftover number at the end of a calculation.

When fourth graders encounter remainders in real life, they have to make a decision about what to do with that leftover amount. To help them master this, we can design problems around three distinct real-world ways to treat a remainder:

  1. Round up to the next whole number (e.g., needing an extra vehicle to fit everyone).
  2. Ignore the remainder (e.g., finding out how many full packages of a product can be made).
  3. Share it as a fraction or decimal (e.g., cutting leftover pizzas or giant cookies into equal slices).

The Remainder Problem-Solving Template

For each of the three scenarios, we can use a predictable three-part layout that prompts the students to actively process the leftover amount rather than just letting it sit there in a column:
