What is the Magna Carta?

Before we unpack its dramatic story, I'd love to know what brings you to learning about the Magna Carta today, and how familiar you already are with medieval history.
I'm studying for a history class, and I'm relatively new to medieval history.
To understand why the Magna Carta was written, we have to look at the disastrous reign of , a monarch whose reputation was so terrible that no English king has been named John since.
John's problems boiled down to two massive issues: failed foreign wars and the extortionate taxes he used to fund them. He lost Normandy to the French and spent years trying to win it back, which was incredibly expensive. To pay for these military campaigns, John squeezed his feudal barons for money using extreme and arbitrary methods. If a baron couldn't pay, John would seize their land or kidnap their family members. By 1215, the barons had had enough and chose to rebel, capturing London and forcing the king to negotiate.

Rather than a grand, celebratory palace, the two sides met at , a quiet, boggy field lying right alongside the River Thames. The location was chosen deliberately: the ground was too wet and marshy for either side to pull off a surprise military attack, acting as a natural neutral zone between King John's stronghold at Windsor Castle and the barons' military camp in London.
When they sat down, the document they created wasn't intended to be a grand blueprint for modern democracy. In reality, the original Magna Carta was drafted as a . The barons wanted immediate, practical protections: they wanted the king to stop overcharging them for inheritances, to stop seizing their properties arbitrarily, and to promise to consult a council before levying new feudal taxes. John, meanwhile, was just trying to buy time to rebuild his forces and avoid being overthrown.
