The Breakdown: What is Weathering?
Think of Earth's crust as a giant, slow-motion recycling system. At the very start of that system is a process called , which is the quiet, continuous breakdown of rocks and minerals right where they sit at or near Earth's surface.
Unlike dramatic volcanic eruptions or earthquakes, weathering is a silent sculptor, patiently wearing down solid stone over hundreds, thousands, or millions of years.
It is the essential first step in reshaping our mountains, sculpting deep canyons, and turning solid rock into something entirely new.
