What is a Gene, Anyway?

To understand how we inherit traits like eye color or height, we first need to look at the basic instruction manual of life. Think of your body as a magnificent, complex house. To build this house, you need blueprints. In your body, those blueprints are your DNA, and a single, specific instruction on that blueprint—like the instruction for making a window—is a . You have thousands of these genes, and they dictate everything from how your heart beats to the color of your hair.

Introducing Alleles: The Flavor Options

Now, let's take that window analogy a step further. While a gene is the general instruction to "make a window," you can have different styles of windows. You could have a circular window, a stained-glass window, or a sliding glass window. These different versions or "flavors" of the same gene are called . For example, there is a gene that determines your eye color, but one version (allele) might say "make brown eyes," while another version (allele) says "make blue eyes."
