Let's look at why the Yam was created in the first place.

At its core, the Yam was built for speed and command. The primary motivation was military intelligence and empire-wide coordination—allowing army orders and battle updates to move faster than an invading force could prepare for them.
Without a system like this, maintaining administrative control over conquered lands stretching from Eastern Europe all the way to China would have been nearly impossible.

How fast could a message actually travel?

Couriers in the Yam could cover an astonishing 120 to 190 miles (200 to 300 kilometers) per day.

To put that in perspective, a typical single horse and rider in the pre-industrial world usually maxed out at about 30 to 40 miles a day before needing rest.

A direct horizontal comparison of a single horse messenger fatiguing and stopping at 30 miles versus a systematic relay courier swapping to fresh horses every 30 miles all the way to 150 miles.

The secret to this incredible speed wasn't pushing one horse to exhaustion. Instead, it was all about the relay station system.
Every 20 to 40 miles—roughly the distance a horse can cover at a full gallop without collapsing—a courier reached a station stocked with fresh horses, food, and shelter. The rider would instantly swap mounts (or pass the dispatch to a fresh rider) and gallop off to the next station without losing momentum.

Maintaining thousands of these stations required immense logistical coordination to keep endless fresh horses, supplies, and staff ready at a moment's notice.

To make that whole network run smoothly without chaos, access had to be strictly regulated.

This control was enforced through the [{]}, a tablet made of wood, silver, or gold that acted as an official diplomatic passport. Carrying a Paiza granted authorized couriers immediate access to fresh mounts, food, and lodging at any station, while ordering locals and station masters to assist them without delay.
