When we think of King Henry VIII, we often picture an obese, bad-tempered tyrant hacking his way through six wives. But when he ascended the throne in 1509 at the tender age of 17, he was the absolute opposite: a tall, athletic, and dazzlingly handsome young man who captured the public's imagination as a true .

What kind of music did Henry write?

Henry wasn't just a casual fan of music—he was a highly accomplished musician and composer who filled his court with songs, dances, and grand performances.
He wrote secular songs, instrumental pieces, and religious compositions. His music was energetic and theatrical, designed to be performed by his court musicians or sung in three- or four-part harmony. He played the lute, the organ, and the virginals (a keyboard instrument similar to a harpsichord), and he owned an enormous collection of instruments. His most famous piece of music is a lively, melancholic love song called , which became a major hit across England and Europe during his lifetime.
