Why Britain? The Hidden Machinery Behind the World's First Industrial NationPodcast
While the podcast generates in the background, let's explore the absolute spark that lit the fuse: the .
Before the mid-1700s, farming was highly inefficient. Most peasants used a system where fields were left fallow every few years to let the soil recover nutrients. However, a series of innovative farming techniques changed everything.
Farmers introduced the four-field crop rotation system, using turnips and clover to replenish the soil without ever leaving it empty. At the same time, landowners began the , consolidating tiny, shared medieval strips of land into larger, private, fenced-in farms. These larger farms allowed wealthy landowners to experiment with new technologies, such as Jethro Tull's mechanical seed drill, which planted seeds deep in the soil in perfect rows, protected from hungry birds.
This agricultural leap forward had a massive double effect: it produced a food surplus that caused Britain's population to skyrocket, and because farming became mechanized and consolidated, millions of small farmers were pushed off their traditional lands, creating a massive pool of ready labor for the brand-new factories in the cities.
