What Exactly Is Animation?

To understand where animation came from, we have to look at what it actually is. At its simplest, animation is the process of sequencing static, still images together to create the . If you have ever rapidly flipped through a sticky note flipbook and watched a little stick figure jump across the pages, you have experienced this illusion firsthand. Your eyes and brain are being tricked into filling in the gaps between those static drawings, translating a rapid succession of still frames into one fluid, continuous movement.

Now that we have defined the core principle behind the magic, we can start traveling back in time. Long before there were film cameras, projector bulbs, or movie theaters, people were already experimenting with making drawings move.

Let's step back into the 19th century, when inventors began building bizarre, beautiful gadgets designed to trick the human eye. Long before celluloid film or movie theaters existed, Victorian families entertained themselves at home using parlor tricks and mechanical "philosophical toys."

The Parlor Toys That Sparked Movement

These devices relied entirely on the rapid sequencing of static images we just discussed. One of the earliest and simplest was the in 1824—a simple disc with a string on each side. By spinning the disc quickly, two separate images on either side (like a bird and an empty cage) would merge into a single image (a bird inside the cage) in your mind. But the real breakthrough for true animated sequencing came in 1833 with the invention of the , the first device to create a true, continuous loop of motion. It used a spinning cardboard disc with a series of sequential drawings printed around its center, separated by small viewing slits. When you spun the disc and looked through the slits into a mirror, the drawings instantly came to life, showing dancers leaping or frogs jumping in an endless, fluid loop.

These toys proved that people were hungry for moving stories. It didn't take long for inventors to dream bigger, eventually moving these tiny cardboard illustrations onto the silver screen.
