What It Means to Talk Without a Brain
When we think of "communication," we usually think of people chatting, dogs barking, or birds singing. All of those require a brain to process thoughts and a nervous system to send rapid signals through the body. organisms like plants have none of those things, yet they are constantly broadcasting and receiving information.
Instead of vocal cords and ears, plants use a sophisticated language of chemistry, light, biology, and physics. Under the hood, their communication is a combination of chemical, electrical, and mechanical signals.
Because they cannot run away from danger, they must adapt to their environment in real time. If a caterpillar starts chewing on a leaf, the plant cannot scream, but it can launch an immediate chemical counter-attack and warn its neighbors.
