Numbers vs. Words: The Two Pillars of Data

At the highest level, every piece of information you gather at work falls into one of two buckets. is all about quantities. It's numerical, measurable, and highly structured. Think of it as the hard, concrete metrics that show up on your business dashboards—like counting how many users clicked a signup button, tracking monthly revenue, or measuring how long a customer stays on a webpage. , on the other hand, is about qualities. It's descriptive, unstructured, and expressed through language and meaning. It captures things that numbers can't easily pin down—like the underlying emotions in a customer feedback email, the physical behavior of someone trying to navigate your software, or the rich explanations from a product interview.

To keep it simple: quantitative data gives you the numbers, while qualitative data gives you the narrative.
