PAID ADS SPECIALIST — INTERVIEW PRACTICE PODCAST

Welcome. In this practice, imagine you are in your interview for a Paid Ads Specialist position. Listen to each question, pause for a second, and then hear a strong example answer.

QUESTION 1: Tell me about yourself and your experience in paid media.

ANSWER: Hi, I’m Marcelo. I’m a performance marketer with over three years of experience managing paid media campaigns across Google Ads, Meta Ads, and TikTok Ads.

My main focus is lead generation and profitability. I don’t just look at clicks or impressions. I focus on generating qualified leads at an efficient cost and understanding what happens after the lead enters the funnel.

I’m also Google Search certified, and I have experience working with CRMs, conversion funnels, tracking, automation, and AI tools to qualify leads and improve the customer journey.

What I enjoy most about performance marketing is analyzing the numbers, identifying bottlenecks, and continuously testing ways to improve results.

QUESTION 2: Walk me through a successful Google Ads campaign you managed.

ANSWER: One campaign I managed was for an events and production company. The main objective was to generate appointment requests through Google Search.

I started by researching and testing different keyword groups and ad variations. Then I analyzed the search terms report to understand what users were actually searching for.

Based on the data, I added negative keywords, removed inefficient terms, and shifted budget toward the better-performing areas of the campaign.

I monitored metrics such as CTR, CPC, conversion rate, cost per lead, and ROAS.

The campaign reached approximately a 1.9 ROAS while generating appointment opportunities.

The main lesson was that continuous optimization and search-term analysis can significantly improve campaign efficiency.

QUESTION 3: Your cost per lead suddenly increases by 40%. What do you check first?

ANSWER: First, I try to identify exactly what changed.

I compare recent performance with the previous period and check whether the higher CPL is coming from an increase in CPC or from a decrease in conversion rate.

Then I review search terms, keyword performance, match types, and negative keywords to see if we’re attracting irrelevant traffic.

I also check CTR and ad relevance. If CTR has dropped, I may test new headlines or descriptions.

After that, I verify conversion tracking and the landing page because sometimes the issue is not the campaign itself.

I prefer to find the root cause before making major changes.

QUESTION 4: How do you decide when to increase a campaign’s budget?

ANSWER: Before increasing budget, I make sure the campaign is consistently achieving its target.

I look at CPL or CPA, conversion volume, and ROAS when revenue tracking is available.

I also want to see stable performance over several days rather than making decisions based on one strong day.

If the campaign is profitable, has enough conversion volume, and still has room to scale, I increase the budget gradually.

After scaling, I closely monitor efficiency because my goal is not just to spend more. My goal is to increase volume without significantly hurting profitability.

QUESTION 5: Tell me about a campaign that didn’t perform well and what you learned.

ANSWER: I once launched a Google Search campaign without doing enough keyword research, and I relied too heavily on broad match keywords.

The campaign started attracting irrelevant traffic. CPL increased, conversion rate was low, and overall performance was below our objective.

I decided to restructure the campaign. I reviewed search terms, refined the keyword strategy, added negative keywords, reorganized the ad groups, and improved the ad copy.

After those changes, performance improved.

The biggest lesson for me was that proper research and campaign structure are essential, and that you should never stop monitoring search intent after launching.

QUESTION 6: How do you explain campaign results to a non-technical client?

ANSWER: I try to translate marketing metrics into business outcomes.

Instead of overwhelming a client with CPC, CTR, and technical terminology, I use simple dashboards and focus on metrics they understand, such as cost per qualified lead, booked appointments, and revenue.

I explain what changed, why it changed, and what I recommend doing next.

For example, instead of saying, “CTR decreased,” I would explain that fewer people are responding to the ads and that we should test a different message.

My goal is for the client to understand the decision, not just the metric.

QUESTION 7: Why do you want to work with our client, and what makes you a strong fit?

ANSWER: I’m interested in working with your client because healthcare lead generation has a very clear connection between marketing performance and real business outcomes.

I like environments where paid media is directly connected to appointments, qualified leads, and revenue.

I believe I’m a strong fit because I’m not a media buyer who only launches campaigns and looks at clicks.

I analyze the entire funnel.

I look at traffic quality, conversion rates, cost per lead, CRM data, and where potential customers are dropping off.

My mindset is always to find the bottleneck, test a solution, measure the result, and keep improving.

FINAL REMINDER:

Speak slowly.

You don’t need complicated English to sound senior.

Use short sentences.

Explain your reasoning.

And whenever possible, structure your answers as:

Problem. Analysis. Action. Result. Learning.

You are not trying to prove that you know every Google Ads feature.

You are showing that you know how to think like a performance marketer.
