Advanced Application and Tips
To start our journey, let's look at how differs from one-point perspective. In one-point perspective, you look directly at the flat front face of an object, like standing right in front of a building. In two-point perspective, you rotate that object slightly so you are looking directly at its corner instead. Think of standing on a street corner, looking at a building: one side of the building angles away from you to the left, and the other side angles away to the right. Because the object is angled, we need two separate points on our paper for those lines to crawl toward.

Let's break down the essential framework you need before you draw a single object. Think of these core components as the invisible scaffolding that keeps your scene from looking warped or crooked. Every two-point perspective sketch relies on three absolute rules:
  1. The : This represents your eye level. No matter where you stand, this imaginary horizontal line is always directly opposite your eyes.
  2. Two Vanishing Points: These are two dots placed on your horizon line, usually pushed far to the left and right edges of your paper. They act like magnets; every horizontal line you draw will crawl toward one of these two points.
  3. Perfect Verticals: Unlike your horizontal lines, which tilt and angle toward the vanishing points, the vertical edges of your objects (like the corners of a building) must remain completely straight up and down.

Let's set up your drawing space. When you are sitting down with a blank sheet of paper, the first thing you want to do is lightly draw a horizontal line right across the middle with your pencil.
Once you have your , make two small dots on it. You will want to place one dot at the very far left edge of your paper, and the other at the very far right edge. Keeping these points as far apart as possible is a secret trick for beginners. If you place them too close to each other in the middle of your page, any box or building you draw will look incredibly squished, distorted, and unnatural.

Let's take our first active step in building a physical object on your page.

To begin drawing your box, draw a single, clean somewhere in the space between your left and right vanishing points. This line shouldn't be tilted or slanted at all; it must run straight up and down, completely perpendicular to your horizon line.

This simple line is the absolute anchor of your drawing: it represents the corner of the box that is sitting closest to your eyes. Because it is the closest edge, everything else we draw will start from this line and push backward into the distance.

Now we get to do some magic. To start turning that single flat vertical line into a 3D corner, we are going to draw light from the top and bottom of your vertical line back to both vanishing points. Take your ruler and align it with the top of your vertical line and your left vanishing point, then draw a light pencil line connecting them. Now do the exact same thing from the top of your vertical line to the right vanishing point. Repeat this process for the bottom of your vertical line, drawing light lines back to both the left and right vanishing points.

Let's cap off the sides of your box. Right now, those light guidelines stretch on forever to the vanishing points, so we need to decide exactly how wide and deep your box is going to be.

To do this, you will draw two new inside your guiding diamond. Draw one straight vertical line to the left of your center corner, and another straight vertical line to the right of it. Make sure both of these lines remain perfectly straight up and down, just like your first corner. Wherever you decide to place them determines the width of the left and right sides of your box. Once they are drawn, you have successfully locked in the side walls of your 3D box.
