Congratulations on the new saw! Getting your first table saw is a massive milestone, and taking the time to learn the safety fundamentals right now is the smartest move you can make.

Before we plug anything in or look at the blade, we need to address a quick checklist. Since this is your first time, what safety gear do you currently have on hand, if any? Also, what are you wearing right now? It sounds trivial, but what you wear around a is actually your very first line of defense.

I have work gloves and glasses, wearing normal clothes.

Let's pause right there, because your current checklist actually has a major safety hazard hiding in plain sight. While wearing safety glasses is absolutely correct, you must never wear work gloves when operating a table saw.
It sounds counterintuitive because we use gloves to protect our hands from splinters, but around a , they are incredibly dangerous. If your bare finger accidentally grazes a spinning blade, you will get a nasty cut, but you can pull your hand away. If a glove fabric fiber catches on a single blade tooth, the machine's motor is powerful enough to instantly drag the glove—and your entire hand—directly into the spinning arbor before you have time to react.
The same rule applies to your clothing: make sure you don't have dangling drawstrings, loose long sleeves, or hanging jewelry, and always tie back long hair.

The Anatomy of a Table Saw

At its core, a table saw is a simple machine, but each component plays a precise role in keeping your cuts straight and your fingers safe. Let's break down the four critical parts you will interact with during every single cut:
  1. The : This is the straight metal guide that runs parallel to the blade. It acts as a guide for your wood to slide against, ensuring your cut stays perfectly parallel to the edge of the board.
