Now that we have covered your personal safety gear, let's look at the actual machine. Understanding the anatomy of your saw is the best way to feel in control of it.
The Anatomy of a Table Saw
- The : This is the straight metal guide that runs parallel to the blade. It acts as a guide for your wood to slide against, ensuring your cut stays perfectly parallel to the edge of the board.
- The Miter Gauge: A removable guide that fits into one of the slots on your table top. You use this to hold wood at a specific angle (usually 90 degrees) for cutting across the grain.
- The Throat Plate: The removable insert that surrounds the blade. It sits flush with the table surface to support your wood right up to the edge of the cut.
- The Blade: The business end of the machine. It projects up through the throat plate, spinning toward you to slice through wood.
