Building up a solid foundation in map reading is a fantastic general skill that makes looking at any map—from a transit layout to a historical atlas—way more rewarding. Let's start right at the very beginning with a simple but profound question: what actually is a ?

At its simplest, a map is a flat, bird's-eye representation of a real place. Because we can't easily carry a 3D globe in our pockets, cartographers have to find ways to project our round Earth onto a flat surface.

Think of it as peeling an orange and trying to lay the peel completely flat on a table—you have to stretch or cut it to make it fit, which is why all flat maps have a little bit of compromise built into them.

Now that we know what a map is, let's talk about how we orient ourselves using it. To keep from getting lost, cartographers rely on a universal system: the .

You already know the big four: North, South, East, and West. On almost every map, North is positioned at the top.

An easy way to remember the clockwise order of the main points is the classic phrase: Never Eat Shredded Wheat (North, East, South, West).

To make things more precise, we also use intermediate directions like Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest, which sit right halfway between the main four points.
