What is Human-Centered Design?
How do designers do this kind of research?
That is the million-dollar question! To get those deep human insights, designers don't rely on guesswork or static surveys. Instead, they use three primary research methods to step directly into the lives of their users.
The Big Three: Observation, Interviews, and Immersion
To truly design for someone, you have to understand them. Designers use a specific toolkit to do this:

Observation: Watching people in their natural environment. This is exactly what the Oral-B team did. They didn't ask kids how they brushed; they watched them do it. Observation reveals what people actually do, which is often very different from what they say they do.

: Having deep, open-ended conversations. Instead of asking yes-or-no questions, designers ask stories-based questions like, "Walk me through the last time you tried to use this app." This helps uncover the emotions and frustrations behind a user's behavior.

Immersion: Putting yourself directly in the user's shoes. If you're designing a service for wheelchair users, you might spend a day navigating the city in a wheelchair yourself. This builds a level of empathy that no research paper can ever match.
