The Spelling Shift
It is wonderful that you are supporting a young learner. When we think of spelling, most of us picture the classic Friday where kids write down a list of words they memorized the night before. But cognitive science has shown that this traditional approach actually works against long-term memory.
Instead of viewing English as a chaotic collection of random words to memorize, we want to help your student understand that it is actually a highly logical system governed by patterns, word origins, and sound rules. When children learn the structure of the system, they can spell thousands of words, not just the ten on their weekly sheet.
