What is Psychology?
To kick things off, let's start with a simple question: what actually is psychology?
At its core, psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. It's a dual-lens discipline: it looks at what we do (our observable actions) and also tries to unpack the messy, beautiful machinery of what we think and feel inside (our internal mental states).
The word itself has deep roots. It comes from the Greek word , meaning "soul," "spirit," or "life breath," and "-logia," meaning "the study of." So, literally translated, you are embarking on the study of the human soul.
Because we can't directly peer inside someone's head to watch a thought form, psychologists use the scientific method to observe behaviors, run controlled experiments, and gather data to make highly educated conclusions about what is happening beneath the surface.
Let's see how this transition from philosophical wonder to hard science actually happened. Ready to look at where it all began?
