The Two Pillars of Pharmacology

At its heart, is the study of how chemical substances interact with living systems. When you administer a medication to a patient, a complex, two-way conversation begins. To make sense of this conversation, we break the science down into two main branches:
  • Pharmacokinetics (PK): What the body does to the drug.
  • Pharmacodynamics (PD): What the drug does to the body.
An easy way to keep them straight is to look at the letters. Think of the D in Pharmadynamics as standing for what the Drug does to the body (like turning a key in a cellular lock). Think of the K in Pharmacokinetics as the Kinetics—the movement—of the drug as the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and eventually kicks it out. Under the PK umbrella, we study the clinical processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.
