I want to learn oceanography
Welcome! It's wonderful to have you here. Oceanography is an incredibly rich field that helps us understand everything from the air we breathe to the deepest, most mysterious trenches on Earth.
To help me tailor our journey to your background and curiosity, what brings you to oceanography, and do you have any specific goals or areas of interest in mind?
I'm preparing for a class or exam
That's very helpful to know! Preparing for a class or exam is a fantastic motivator, and we will make sure you build a rock-solid foundation to ace it.
Before we map out our study plan, what level is the class or exam you're preparing for (for example, is it high school, introductory college, or something more advanced), and are there any specific topics or a syllabus we need to focus on?
I'm in my final year of uni, this a course we studied this last semester
That final year of university is such a pivotal time, and revisiting last semester's material is a smart way to lock in that knowledge for your exams.
To make sure we tailor this review perfectly to your past course, which specific subdisciplines did your professor emphasize or focus on the most?
It was an even mix of all four major subdisciplines
Now that we know your university course gave equal weight to all four major areas, we have a clear map to follow. To make sure we spend our time where it helps you most, let's decide how to kick off this review.
Begin right away with Subdiscipline 1: Geological Oceanography
It's wonderful to dive right into our first major discipline! Let's start with the very foundation of the seafloor itself: how ocean basins are born, move, and reshape our planet through the lens of geological oceanography.
The Dynamic Seafloor
This continuous creation of crust at underwater mountain chains means that the seafloor is youngest at the center of the ocean and gets progressively older the closer you get to the continents. It is a massive conveyor belt that slowly pushes entire continents apart and reshapes the face of our world.
