Our First Step: IT Foundations

Before we can talk about defending a computer system, we have to understand what we are actually protecting. In the cybersecurity world, we refer to everything we need to defend as the . Think of a computer system like a physical house. You cannot secure a house if you do not know how many windows it has, where the doors are, or how the lock on the front door operates. In IT, our "house" is made up of three core layers:
  1. Hardware: The physical machine—the actual brick and mortar of your house.
  2. Operating System (OS): The software (like Windows, macOS, or Linux) that manages the hardware and lets you interact with it. This is like the internal hallway layout and the house rules.
  3. Networking: How your computer talks to other computers over the internet. These are the roads and pipes connecting your house to the rest of the world.
If you do not understand these three pieces, it is impossible to secure them because you won't know where the vulnerable entry points are.

Every computer system starts with physical hardware. If we do not secure the physical machine itself, any software defense we build on top of it is essentially useless.

How can someone hack physical hardware?

It is a common belief that hacking only happens through glowing green code on a screen, but the physical world is actually a massive target for cybercriminals.

There are three main ways an attacker can compromise physical hardware directly:

1. Unauthorized Port Access & Malicious USBs

The simplest hardware hack is just walking up to a machine and plugging something in.

An attacker might use a malicious USB device, like a . To your computer, this looks exactly like an ordinary, harmless keyboard. However, the moment it is plugged in, it automatically mimics an ultra-fast typist, injecting malicious commands to steal passwords or install backdoors in seconds.

2. Physical Theft of Storage

If a thief steals a computer's actual hard drive, they do not need to guess your Windows login password.

They can simply take the drive out, plug it into their own computer as an external drive, and read all your files directly. Unless the storage is encrypted, your operating system's login screen is completely bypassed.

3. Network Cable Sniffing

If an attacker gets physical access to the network cables running through an office, they can plug in small hardware taps.

These tiny, physical devices intercept and copy the raw internet traffic flowing through the cable, sending sensitive data right to the attacker.
