What Exactly is a Cell?

To start at the very beginning, a is the smallest, most basic unit of life that is responsible for keeping an organism alive and functioning. Every single living thing on Earth—from the giant redwood trees to the bacteria on your smartphone—is made of cells. An easy way to explain this to 8th graders is to think of cells as the living "Lego bricks" of our world. Just like you can build a tiny plastic house or a massive medieval castle out of individual Lego pieces, nature uses cells to build everything from a single-celled to a human being containing about 30 trillion cells working in perfect harmony.

  3. All cells come from pre-existing cells. Cells do not just magically appear out of thin air. Every single cell on Earth was made because an older cell divided in half.

Now that we know what a cell is and the rules it follows, we have to look at the two main ways nature designs them. In the biological world, every single cell fits into one of two massive categories: cells or cells.

To make this immediately fun and easy for 8th graders, you can introduce them using a simple analogy: Studio Apartments versus Micro-Mansions.

Prokaryotic cells (like bacteria) are the tiny studio apartments of the cellular world. They are small, simple, and everything is crammed into one single open room. Eukaryotic cells (like the ones in plants, animals, and us) are the sprawling micro-mansions. They are much larger and divided into many specialized, membrane-walled rooms called organelles.
