How to sew a pair of custom fit jeans from scratch
Welcome! I'm so excited to help you dive into the art of making custom-fit jeans.
There's nothing quite like the feeling of sliding into a pair of jeans designed perfectly for your unique body, constructed with your own hands. Before we dive into the tools and fabric, I'd love to learn a little bit about where you're starting from so we can tailor this session perfectly to you.
To help me customize our session, what is your experience level with sewing, and do you already have a pattern or specific pair of jeans in mind to use as a template?
I'm a beginner, and I don't have a pattern yet
That is completely fine! Everyone starts somewhere, and sewing a pair of jeans is actually the ultimate way to level up your sewing skills from a beginner to an absolute pro.
To make sure we get a truly perfect, custom fit, we will eventually want to use a pair of your favorite well-fitting pants as a visual baseline, or we can build our pattern step-by-step from raw body measurements. But before we touch any scissors or patterns, we need to gather our raw ingredients.
Since you have a standard sewing machine, the very first thing we need to talk about is how to set it up so it doesn't struggle. Denim is dense, heavy, and notoriously tough on home sewing machines. If you try to sew denim with a standard, lightweight universal needle, it will almost certainly bend, break, or skip stitches.
Instead, we use a specialized , which is specifically engineered to punch through multiple thick layers of fabric without breaking.
For standard mid-weight denim, you'll want to grab a size 90/14 needle. If you end up choosing a very heavy, stiff denim, you'll want to step up to a 100/16 needle.
