It is completely normal to feel a bit intimidated at first, but once you know the secret layout of these papers, they become much easier to navigate.

The Skeleton of Science

Almost every original research paper in psychology and neuroscience is built on a standard four-part skeleton known as . Think of this structure as a predictable map. Once you know where the landmarks are, you never have to worry about getting lost in the text.
Before we dive into those four core sections, there is one crucial bonus piece at the very front: the . It is a tiny, highly compressed summary of the entire study.
Let's look at how the main four IMRaD sections stack up to tell a cohesive story. Each part answers one fundamental question about the research project:

Before we unpack each room of this house, it's also helpful to know that not all scientific papers look like this. Sometimes, instead of reporting a fresh experiment they ran themselves, researchers write a literature review, which synthesizes dozens of previous papers to show the current state of a whole field. As a student, you will run into both.
