The Four Chambers of the Heart

To understand how the heart works, think of it as a highly coordinated double-pump split into four distinct rooms, or . The two rooms on the top are the atria (singular: atrium), and the two rooms on the bottom are the ventricles. Because the heart is a double-pump, it has a strict division of labor:
  • The Right Side (Right Atrium and Right Ventricle) is the collection and shipping department for blood that has used up its oxygen supply. It receives this tired, oxygen-poor blood from your body and sends it straight to your lungs.
  • The Left Side (Left Atrium and Left Ventricle) is the high-power distribution center. It collects that freshly refreshed, oxygen-rich blood returning from your lungs and forcefully shoots it back out to nourish the rest of your body.
