It's great to have you here, and I am excited to help you brush up on your cardiac anatomy. Let's start our refresher by looking at how the heart is divided and why the muscular walls of these chambers look so different under a microscope.
The Four Chambers and Wall Thickness
The heart is split into a right and left side by a central wall called the septum, creating a highly efficient double-pump system. On each side, you have an upper receiving chamber, the , and a lower pumping chamber, the . Because their roles in managing blood pressure and flow are so distinct, the muscle thickness—or myocardium—varies dramatically between them.

To visualize this difference, I have put together a diagram of the heart's chambers. If you look closely at the walls, you will notice that the left ventricle has a myocardium that is about three times thicker than the right ventricle. This structural difference exists because the right ventricle only has to push blood a short distance to the low-resistance pulmonary capillary bed in the lungs, whereas the left ventricle must generate enough pressure to force blood through the entire high-resistance systemic circulation of the body.
