The Heart of the Atom

To understand how we harness nuclear power, we have to start by looking at the incredibly tiny structure of the itself. In high school physics, you might have learned that an atom is mostly empty space with a dense nucleus at its center. This central core is packed with positively charged protons and neutral neutrons.
The force holding these subatomic particles together in the nucleus is the . It is the strongest fundamental force in nature, operating over unimaginably tiny distances to keep protons from flying apart due to their mutual electromagnetic repulsion.
