Think of the (GPS) as a giant, high-tech network of digital lighthouses. Instead of using light to warn ships near rocky shores, this system uses radio waves beamed down from space to tell your smartphone exactly where you are standing on Earth.
To make this whole system work flawlessly, GPS is divided into three main teams working together behind the scenes:
- The Space Team (Satellites): A constellation of over 30 satellites zipping around Earth. They continuously broadcast the exact time and their current location.
- The Control Team (Ground Stations): Earth-bound stations that use radar to track the satellites, making sure they are healthy and flying in their correct orbits.
- The User Team (Receivers): The tiny chip inside your smartphone or car navigation system. It simply "listens" to the signals coming from space to figure out your position.
