Defining Horticulture

At its roots, the word "horticulture" comes from the Latin words hortus (meaning garden) and colere (meaning to cultivate). Academically, we define as the science, art, and technology of cultivating, processing, and marketing intensively managed food and ornamental plants.

To truly grasp this field, we must distinguish it from two closely related disciplines that you will frequently encounter in plant science literature:
