Before we build our roadmap and start exploring how this metal-and-wooden machine reshaped the world, I'd love to know a little bit about what brings you here today.

The World Before the Mechanical Press

To truly appreciate the mechanical breakthrough of the printing press, we first have to look at how books were made for centuries prior. In medieval Europe, if you wanted a copy of a book, a had to sit down in a monastery room called a scriptorium and copy every single letter by hand.
This manual copying process made books incredibly expensive. A single complete Bible could take an entire year to produce and cost as much as a modest house, making books a luxury reserved strictly for royalty, the church, and the ultra-wealthy. If we look beyond Europe, however, early forms of printing were already thriving.

Woodblocks and Clay

Long before Gutenberg, printers in China and East Asia developed . Carvers would shave away the wood around a written text, leaving the characters raised. They would then ink the block and press paper onto it. In the 11th century, a Chinese commoner named Bi Sheng took this further by inventing movable ceramic type.
While ceramic and wood movable type were incredible achievements, East Asian languages had thousands of distinct characters, making a massive inventory of individual pieces highly complex to manage. Korea eventually pioneered in the 13th and 14th centuries, casting individual characters in bronze to print government documents and Buddhist texts.
These eastern innovations laid the conceptual foundation for reproducing texts. But in Europe, the technology remained completely manual. To understand the transition, we must look at how Gutenberg took these separate ideas and mechanized them into a single, high-speed production line.
