Modern genetic studies show that they are descendants of Neolithic farmers who became genetically isolated in the rugged terrain of the Western Pyrenees. Because of this isolation, they managed to preserve a distinct identity and culture despite wave after wave of migrations and invasions sweeping through the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.
