Gardening
Welcome! I'm so excited to help you get started on your gardening journey. Before we dig in and look at our main learning path, I'd love to learn just a little bit more about what you have in mind so we can make this session as helpful as possible for your specific space.
To help me tailor our sessions, could you tell me a little bit about what you're hoping to get out of gardening? Are you interested in growing food, beautifying your space with flowers, or perhaps both? Also, do you have a specific space in mind (like a backyard, balcony, or just indoor windowsills)?
I'd love to grow bright flowers on my sunny balcony.
I am so thrilled to hear that! Bright, beautiful flowers bathing in the sunshine on a balcony is one of the most rewarding ways to garden. Before we start buyings pots and soil, we want to make sure we set you up for success. I've designed a personalized roadmap just for you to help you transform your sunny balcony into a flourishing floral haven. Here's our game plan:
Balcony Gardening Basics
Because balcony gardening relies entirely on growing in pots and planters rather than in the ground, it comes with its own unique set of physical rules. Before you start bringing heavy bags of soil home, the first thing we need to consider is structural. Soil and water are surprisingly heavy! A single large, water-saturated ceramic pot can easily weigh over 50 pounds. This is why checking any building weight limits or rules for your balcony is always a smart first step.
Beyond weight, you'll also want to look closely at your balcony's layout. We need to think about how water will drain out of your pots without dripping directly onto your downstairs neighbors' heads, and how the local wind patterns might affect taller, top-heavy plants. By planning for these structural quirks of early on, you can choose the right materials to keep your balcony safe and dry.
