To start, we have to address a common misconception: the idea that we can design an assignment that is completely "AI-proof." In reality, there is no prompt or task that a generative AI tool cannot eventually mimic, summarize, or write. Instead, our goal is to shift from looking for an airtight, uncheatable prompt to building learning experiences.
When we try to make assignments "AI-proof," we often end up relying on untrustworthy that frequently flag human writing as robotic—especially for young writers, English language learners, or students with unique voices. When we switch our mindset to "AI-resistance," we stop acting like detectives trying to catch a thief, and start acting like architects designing a process where using AI simply does not make sense anymore.
This architecture relies on shifting our focus away from the "final product" and placing all the value on the writing process itself. If a student's grade is mostly tied to a polished, final 5-paragraph essay, the temptation to use AI is high. But what happens if we shift that value?

I have set up a blueprint of how this shift works visually. As you can see, when the weight of the grade is distributed across the thinking steps—the messy brainstorming, the peer-feedback loops, and the self-reflections—the final text generation becomes a minor step. AI cannot replicate a student's live classroom interactions or their self-reflection on how their ideas evolved.

When you cannot physically monitor a student's screen or watch them put pencil to paper in a physical classroom, relying on process-based design becomes even more critical to ensure authentic writing.

Designing for the Digital Screen

In a combined live and asynchronous virtual space, we can build AI-resistance by leaning heavily into . For your asynchronous students, it means utilizing cloud-based documents where you can easily view the version history to see a student's gradual, messy drafting over several days rather than a single copy-pasted block of text.

Another highly effective strategy for online learners is incorporating voice or video reflection. Instead of asking for a written summary of what they learned—which an AI can generate in seconds—have students record a quick 60-second audio or video snippet explaining their writing choice, or explaining how they came up with their main character. This not only defeats the utility of an AI shortcut, but it also brings their unique, physical voice back into your digital classroom.

How can I easily check version history without spending hours grading?

That is the million-dollar question. If checking version history means clicking through dozens of documents and scrolling through a timeline of edits for every single student, you will burn out by week two.

The Five-Second Version Check

The secret to keeping this efficient is to make checking version history a targeted diagnostic tool, not a daily chore. You do not need to read through every draft. Instead, you only open the version history when a final draft raises a massive red flag—like a student who struggled all week suddenly turning in a flawless, college-level essay. To make this work in Google Docs or Microsoft Word, look at the visual pattern of edits rather than reading the text. A student who genuinely wrote an essay over a week will have a version history that looks like a chaotic, living document. You will see small, messy blocks of text added at different times, deleted sentences, and spelling corrections. Conversely, a copy-paste shortcut looks like a light switch: the document is completely blank at 11:58 PM, and then at 11:59 PM, a fully formatted, 500-word essay instantly appears in a single edit block. Spotting this dramatic "all-at-once" block takes exactly five seconds.
To make this seamless, you need to set clear, upfront expectations with your online students. In your syllabus and assignment instructions, state clearly that all writing must be done directly inside their assigned cloud document (like Google Docs). Let them know that you check the revision history as part of the grading process, and that documents with no version history—or documents where the entire essay was pasted in all at once—cannot be accepted for a grade. Once students know the "ink trail" is a mandatory part of the submission, the temptation to use AI shortcuts drops dramatically because they realize they would have to spend more time faking a realistic revision history than just writing the draft themselves.

What do I do if a student says they wrote it offline and pasted it in?

This is the most common pushback you will get, and it is a crucial moment for setting your classroom culture.

Handling the Offline Excuse

When a student claims, "My internet went out, so I wrote it in Notepad and pasted it in," or "I write better offline," you want to respond with empathy but hold a firm, logical line. In a fully online environment, the is not just a digital piece of paper—it is the classroom itself.

If a student submits a blank-to-finished document, you do not have to accuse them of cheating. Instead, simply treat it as an incomplete submission. You can tell them: "I believe you worked hard on this, but because I can't see your writing steps, I can't grade this draft. To prevent this from becoming a battle of wills, offer a simple diagnostic alternative. If a student insists they must write offline, let them know that is absolutely fine—but to get credit, they will need to hop on a quick 3-minute video call with you to verbally walk through their essay. Ask them to explain how they organized their paragraphs, why they chose a specific word, or to define a complex term they used. A student who genuinely wrote the paper offline will easily be able to talk about their own ideas. A student who used an AI generator will struggle to explain the text, and they will quickly realize that writing directly in the Google Doc is much easier than doing a live oral defense.

By setting this clear boundary, you shift your entire teaching philosophy from 'detecting' plagiarism to 'designing out' the usefulness of AI. You are no longer policing their final outputs; you are coaching their live thinking.

How do I explain this process-based grading to parents?

Explaining this to parents is the secret weapon for making this system work. When parents understand that you are protecting their child's unique voice rather than just looking for a reason to fail them, they become your biggest allies.

Reframing the Conversation for Families

When you communicate this shift to parents, avoid academic jargon like "pedagogical frameworks" or "." Instead, focus on a simple analogy that every parent understands: learning to ride a bike.

Explain that if you only grade the final essay, it is like grading a child on whether they can ride a bike at the end of the summer, without ever watching them practice. Process-based grading means you are grading the practice—the wobbles, the steering corrections, and the effort—because that is where the actual muscle memory is built.

Once parents see that you are setting their child up to become a confident, independent thinker rather than a copy-paste machine, they will gladly support the digital ink trails.

Think of this shared file as the student's physical desk. 3. Writing Offline Policy: If a student loses internet access or must work offline for any reason, they can absolutely do so. However, to receive process points for that work, the student must schedule a brief, 3-minute video chat with me to share their screen, show their rough drafts, and verbally explain their main ideas and writing choices.

4. Our Shared Promise:

  • The Student: I promise to do my writing inside my assigned cloud document so my teacher can help me grow.
  • The Teacher: I promise to use the revision history to celebrate my students' messy efforts, rather than relying on flawed, computerized detector tools.
