The Five Food Groups of Commercial Real Estate

To kick things off, let's look at what actually counts as commercial real estate. While residential real estate is all about providing a personal home, commercial real estate exists to for its owners.
Most commercial properties fit into five major categories. Think of these as the main "food groups" of the industry:
  • Office: Everything from suburban medical clinics to gleaming downtown skyscrapers.
  • Retail: Your local grocery store, neighborhood strip malls, and massive regional shopping centers.
  • Industrial: The heavy-duty buildings behind the scenes, like manufacturing plants and the massive that process your online shopping orders.
  • Multifamily: Apartment buildings or complexes with 5 or more units. Even though people live there, they are bought and valued as commercial, income-generating businesses.
  • Hospitality: Hotels, motels, and short-term resorts where the "leases" are often just a single night long.
