Learn hip hop dancing
Welcome! I'm so excited to help you start your hip hop dance journey. Before we jump into finding our rhythm, learning to groove, and breaking down moves, I'd love to know a bit more about you so I can tailor this exactly to your pace.
Have you tried any other dance styles before, or is this your very first time learning how to dance?
I've tried other styles, but hip hop is new to me.
That's awesome! Having experience in other dance styles is a massive superpower because you already understand coordination, balance, and how to move your body to a beat. The coolest part about transitioning to hip hop is that we get to play with a completely different kind of gravity and weight.

Let's continue to the posture and body mechanics.
The Triad of Hip Hop Posture
- Release your knees: Give your knees a soft, springy bend. You should feel like you can bounce effortlessly on the spot.
- Hinge your hips: Softly tilt your pelvis forward slightly and let your upper torso lean forward just a fraction. This isn't slouching; it's a relaxed, athletic readiness.
- Drop your shoulders: Let all the tension drain out of your neck and shoulders. Let your arms hang loosely by your sides, completely ready to react.

Take a quick moment to stand up and try this out. Notice how different it feels to hold your weight down low rather than pulling it up high.
