Inside almost every cell of your body, there is a spiral ladder called (DNA). If you were to uncoil the DNA from just a single cell and stretch it out, it would be about six feet long! Yet, it is packed so tightly that it fits easily inside a cellular command center that you cannot even see with the naked eye. The secret to how DNA stores information lies in the rungs of this spiral ladder. These rungs are made of four chemical bases that act like letters in an alphabet: Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G). These letters are incredibly picky about who they pair up with to form the rungs. They follow strict, unbreakable pairing rules: A always pairs with T C always pairs with G Because of these rules, if you know the sequence of one side of the DNA ladder, you can always perfectly predict the other side. This simple pairing is what allows our cells to copy their genetic code with near-perfect accuracy when making new cells.
