The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen with a leading organisation in the data centre and critical infrastructure sector for a APAC Development Lead to join its growing regional team.

This is a key role focused on the early-stage development of data centre projects across APAC, working at the intersection of engineering, site development and project strategy.

You will play a critical role in assessing new opportunities, determining site viability and shaping the engineering approach from the earliest stages of development. This includes technical due diligence, site feasibility, infrastructure assessment, utilities, constructability and development planning.

The role offers significant regional exposure and long-term career progression, with the opportunity to develop into broader project development and leadership responsibilities as the business continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and support technical due diligence and feasibility assessments for potential data centre sites across APAC. Assess site constraints, infrastructure, utilities, accessibility and overall development readiness. Provide mechanical engineering input into early-stage data centre development and concept design. Evaluate power, water, cooling and other critical infrastructure requirements. Develop initial engineering strategies, site concepts and development approaches. Identify technical, regulatory and constructability risks and recommend mitigation strategies. Work with real estate, engineering, commercial, finance and project delivery teams to evaluate new opportunities. Engage with utilities, consultants, authorities and other external stakeholders. Provide technical input into site selection, investment decisions and project prioritisation. Support the transition of projects from early-stage development into detailed design and construction. Contribute to the development of new data centre opportunities across multiple APAC markets.

About You

We are particularly interested in candidates with a Mechanical Engineering background who have gained experience within the data centre sector and have exposure to site development or technical feasibility.

You will ideally bring:

A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline. 5–8 years of relevant engineering experience, ideally within data centres, mission-critical infrastructure or large-scale projects. Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and an understanding of data centre infrastructure. Experience with site assessment, technical due diligence or early-stage development. Exposure to utilities, infrastructure or project development would be advantageous. Experience working across APAC markets is preferred. Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills. A willingness to travel regionally Importantly, you don't need to have experience across every aspect of the role.

To tailor our practice, tell me a bit about your current background: How many years of mechanical engineering experience do you have, and how much of that has been directly involved with data centres or large critical infrastructure?

I'm a pure-play data centre mechanical engineer with about 5 years of solid experience.

Five years as a pure-play data centre mechanical engineer is a perfect sweet spot. It means you have the deep, hands-on technical credibility that is incredibly hard to fake, and you are right at the threshold where they are looking to transition someone into a regional leadership role.

The Pivot from Design to Feasibility

In a pure design role, you are usually handed a clean boundary limit and told to build a system within it. In early-stage and due diligence, you are the one defining those boundaries.

You will be looking at raw land or shell buildings across APAC and asking: Can we even cool a 50-megawatt facility here? Where is the water coming from? Is the local humidity going to destroy our efficiency?

Because they explicitly mentioned they are willing to train you on the commercial and regional side, your goal in this interview is to show that your technical baseline is so solid that you can easily layer those business skills on top of it.

Let's start by mapping your existing technical skills to this new "early-stage" mindset.

To bridge this gap, tell me about a time in your current or past roles where you had to assess a major technical constraint before a design could actually kick off. For example, did you ever have to solve a massive cooling, space, or utility supply challenge on a project?
