The Mystery of Joy Milne

Let's dive straight into the Engage phase with one of the most famous and mind-blowing stories in modern medical statistics: the case of Joy Milne, the woman who can smell Parkinson's disease. Joy's husband, Les, was diagnosed with when he was 45. But about six years before his medical diagnosis, Joy noticed something strange: Les had developed a distinct, musty musk scent. She didn't think much of it until years later, when she walked into a support group for Parkinson's patients and realized the entire room smelled exactly like her husband.
When researchers at Edinburgh University heard about Joy's claim, they designed a brilliant experiment to test her. They gave her 12 identical t-shirts to smell. Six of the shirts had been worn by people diagnosed with Parkinson's, and six had been worn by healthy control subjects who didn't have the disease. Joy's job was simple: smell each shirt and sort them into two piles.
