Introducing the All New Oboe

Today we're unveiling the latest version of Oboe and announcing our $16M Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz.

Oboe was founded with a singular mission: to make humanity smarter. We aim to do that by reigniting the curiosity and love of learning that we all seem to have lost in recent years.

Since launching Oboe three months ago, we’ve discovered a great amount about how people learn, what they’re curious about, and how to best leverage AI to teach. We’ve spent every day since iterating on the platform, and we’re excited to share all of the changes we’ve made in our brand new version of Oboe (available now at our new domain, oboe.com).

A New Goal-Oriented User Experience

In studying how people used Oboe in the wild, we found that over two-thirds of prompts they enter are goal-oriented. From “I want to understand financial statements” to “Using AI for work,” users often know what they want to achieve; they just don’t know how to get there.

Oboe now introduces a new structure to courses built around chapters (which can be consumed as text or podcasts).

Each time you enter a prompt, we do two things:

  1. Figure out what your objective is, and
  2. Work backwards to develop the best path to get you there

Enriched Courses with Embedded Formats

A big part of our product philosophy at Oboe revolves around multimodality. After all, people learn best when they can immerse themselves in different forms of the same material.

But whereas the first version of Oboe put the onus on the user to determine when and how to use our formats, this new version magically unifies them by embedding the right format at the right time, all in one seamlessly integrated experience.

For example, quizzes now appear contextually to reinforce material you just learned:

Flashcards provide check-in points to study key material:

Oboe now has a rich toolbox of embeddable formats, so we’re always teaching you any topic in the most pedagogically effective and interesting way.

A Best-in-Class STEM Tutor

Among the most common use cases for Oboe are science, engineering, and math. Our new version takes these experiences to the next level by offering best-in-class courses for learning any STEM topic.

For instance, you can learn math or science topics with rich fully-personalized visuals:

Or learn programming concepts with step-by-step instruction:

Higher Quality and Approachability

People learn best when they’re taught by the best teachers. We’ve rearchitected our generation pipeline to ensure that learning content is approachable, narrative-driven, and high quality. Nothing should ever feel like AI slop.

You now have full control over how Oboe will teach you. When entering your prompt, share some context on why you want to learn the topic, or let us know what related things you already know. This will help us create a better course and teach you more effectively.

Unlimited Course Creation

Oboe now allows every user to create as many courses as they want, 100% free. We want to make sure that when you dive into a course, it’s exactly the course you’re looking for. And as always, Oboe courses are sharable for free as well.

Non-subscribers can access a limited number of the chapters in these courses, and we offer two paid tiers for higher usage. Our pro tier also lets you export courses (complete with study guides and printable quizzes). Please note that non-subscribers do have a rate limit for how many courses they can create during a given time period.

A New Era of Learning

To help us achieve all of the above and everything to come, we’re thrilled to announce our $16M Series A round of funding, led by our new partners at Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from our existing investors Eniac, Haystack, Offline, and Factorial, as well as Adam D’Angelo, Garry Tan, Lenny Rachitsky, Mati Staniszewski, Mikey Shulman, Jared Hecht, and M.G. Siegler.

Our ambition is nothing short of reinventing how billions of people learn, a vision we know our new and existing investors share.

It all starts with today’s new version of Oboe, and we have a very exciting roadmap for next year ahead.

Best,
